Acinos alpinus  Mountain Basil thyme
The closest you will ever get to a blue flowered thyme, not only pretty g.c. plant but delicious with game

Clinopodium vulgare  Wild basil
Apart from belonging to the same family, this English native is not even remotely similar to Basil though eaten by the adventurous (or desperate)

Clinopodium vulgare

Ocimum basilicum  Sweet Basil
The one for Pesto, sprinkling on tomatoes etc

Ocimum basilicum var horapha   Thai Basil
Not your familiar Genovese, this one has a taste all of its own which makes it indispensible in Thai dishes

Ocimum basilicum var neapolitanum  Lettuce leaf Basil
Enormous lvs with a hint of licorice and much preferred by some people. New strains are more fungus resistant than in the past.

Ocimum basilicum var purpurea  Purple basil
Amazingly decorative leaves to enhance your Mediterranean salads

Ocimum basilicum var purpurea X  African Blue Basil
The nearest you will ever come to a per Basil but strictly for indoors. Makes a small shrub with usual Basil scent and flavour. Purple lvs

Ocimum citriodorum  Lemon Basil, Kermanjee
Slightly more fragile than the others, but really does have lemon scent making it ideal with fish. The flowers are quite pleasant too

Ocimum minimum  Greek Basil
A Basil with very small leaves, very tasty and a definite ornament on the kitchen window sill

Ocimum sanctum  Holy Basil
Supposedly used in Buddhist rituals or may be just eaten by the monks, not dissimilar to Horapha but without the latter's reddish tinge
